Elevated to Partner: Unique Career Path Brings New Depth to College and Graduate School Advising
Deena Maerowitz has always had a passion for working with children and teenagers, and she and grew up with a strong ethic of serving others. After graduating from Mount Holyoke College, she decided to pursue a joint Law Degree and Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Connecticut because she understood how this combined expertise would open doors to more opportunities for helping young people.
During the first phase of her career, Deena became a seasoned attorney and social worker serving as an advocate for children and their families. She also held positions where she focused on educational issues at the policy and programmatic levels, serving as Counsel in the U.S. Congress and working with the Children’s Defense Fund. In the second phase of her career, Deena served as Associate Director of Admissions at Columbia University Business School, where she reviewed applications and managed the acceptance wait list.
For the last decade, Deena has been an educational advisor, which she describes as the “perfect career” to fuse together her varied expertises. “As a social worker,” she says, “I appreciate how different college experiences fulfill different learning and emotional needs. As a lawyer, I’ve developed the instincts to encourage a candidate to put his or her best foot forward. And as an admissions officer, I understand which priorities colleges look for in their students.”
Being an educational consultant also makes use of Deena’s knack for cultivating genuine connection with young adults and their families. Her clients have been admitted to undergraduate and graduate schools at Ivy League and other top tier colleges nationwide. She advises traditional students, as well as those with learning differences, and those who have come out of therapeutic placements. She also works with students as early as ninth grade—helping families understand how choices about classes and extracurricular activities throughout secondary school build toward a strong applicant portfolio for the next step.
“The work that I do now is rewarding because I impact young people’s lives so directly,” Deena says. “I’ve seen how helping students find the next best place for them creates the choices they want for their futures.”
Due to her experience and warm personality, Deena is frequently invited to be a guest speaker by libraries, colleges, and other forums. She has been interviewed by the New York Times, Boston Business Journal, Newsweek, and many other publications.
Deena says her affiliation with The Bertram Group has benefitted her clients for the last three years because she can tap into the expertise of a larger group, all of whom share the same professional values. “Everyone in this group is committed to providing the best service and focusing on the student’s needs,” Deena says. She is excited to become a Bertram partner because, “This group has a wonderful sense of camaraderie. I’ve found my work home.”
