Karl Palmgren
Day School Advising
After 30 years in independent and public school education, Karl has become an affiliate with The Bertram Group, advising students and their families seeking independent day school placements.
Karl began his career in the Stamford and Westport public school systems and after five years, he moved into international education, working for three years at the American School of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Upon his return to the States, Karl spent 10 years at Greenwich Academy as an Upper School history teacher, class dean, and founding swim coach for GA’s team. In 2013, while continuing to teach and coach, Karl graduated from Columbia University’s Teachers College with an Ed.M in Independent School Leadership. This took Karl out to Michigan for a position as Head of Upper School and Assistant Head of School at the University Liggett School in Grosse Pointe.
Karl and his family returned to Fairfield County in 2017, understanding the exceptional educational opportunities available in the local independent day school market. When looking for options for his own children, Karl took into consideration each school’s mission and philosophy, approach to learning, and overall program. During this time, Karl accepted the position as Head of Upper School at New Canaan Country School, working closely with the secondary school placement office at NCCS and sitting on the admissions committee for Upper School applicants. Through his role as division head and by going through the independent school application process with four of his children, Karl brings a broad perspective and depth to day school consulting.
Karl’s many roles in independent schools uniquely position him to effectively advise families seeking an independent day school experience. He is excited to share his knowledge and experience in assisting families navigate the complex process of finding the right school for their children.
