Therapeutic Options

We help families find their footing when everything changes.

No matter what the details of your child’s situation, they—and you—are not alone in having encountered such obstacles. Yet many families find themselves floundering when adversity hits, feeling an urgent need to take action, but not knowing what resources or courses of action are appropriate or available.

Bertram consultants are knowledgeable about the variety of options that can help families regain balance. We frequently help families whose children struggle with depression, anxiety, substance issues, eating disorders, school refusal, and a wide variety of other at-risk circumstances. We often serve as mediators between adolescents and parents, gathering information and making referrals to other professionals as needed to clarify the issues at hand. Our professional relationships connect families to services in their own communities, and we have personally visited and worked with more than 100 wilderness and other residential programs nationwide.

Two useful files are attached for parents facing this challenge.  The first is a description of what families can expect when dealing with an at-risk child and how the consultants at The Bertram Group work with parents and the child to develop a plan for recovery. The second piece was prepared by the Independent Educational Consultants Association, in conjunction with the National Association of Therapeutic Schools and Programs, and provides a description of the various programs that exist to provide assistance to at-risk youth.

In Their Own Words

The student who worked with you spoke with GREAT enthusiasm of having visited with you, how you listened to him and how helpful you were. My instincts tell me you are far more important to this young man personally than consultants usually are to their kids in special needs situations.

Professional who works with at-risk students

We have a good feeling about (the new program). (Our son) is not perfect yet, but he is doing so much better. The progress reports frequently do not report all the growth and good. Thank you for your wisdom, kindness, support, and most of all, your patience.

Parent

Our kids would not be where they are today without you. (Our son) has just gotten his second-term grades and he has improved so much. Last year at this time we were wondering if he would make it through another year. He LOVES (his new school) so much and is really thriving.

Parent

Your graciousness, light-heartedness, and sense of humor make it that much easier to work with families. I know that you bring a personal touch and sense of purpose to the families that you work with and I admire that.
